Materials: • Calendar • Crayons and markers
Waiting to celebrate a birthday or special event can be hard for young children. Make calendars to show children a way they can count down to a special day and make waiting a little more fun! Give each child a copy of a calendar you have prepared in advance. It may be a good idea to use the current month. Name the seven days of the week, count to seven and explain that Sunday is the first day of the week on our calendar.
Help children draw something that makes each day in one week unique. It may be a birthday, a holiday, the day the class goes to library, music, P.E., something being served for lunch, or the weather. Discuss what makes each day unique.
Children will – • Learn that there are seven days in a week • Recognize the names of the seven days of the week • Count to seven • Identify daily routines • Develop a sense of time and sequence—today, tomorrow, and yesterday • Learn that Saturday and Sunday are the days in the weekend • Compare weekday and weekend routines—getting up early to go to school vs. sleeping late • Become familiar with a calendar and its many uses, such as a way to mark time and as a way to record daily events, experiences, and observations • Know that Sunday is the first day of the week on our calendar
