If possible, visit a home under construction. Before getting too close, talk with your child about safety. There may be nails or tools lying around. Children can hold a gown-up’s hand while exploring the new home.
Talk about the different parts of the house—frame, foundation, roof. Can you tell how many rooms will be in this house? Can you find the kitchen, the bathroom, and the bedrooms?
Afterwards, go home and draw a picture of your own home. Children can draw and label the different rooms in their house. Talk about what room is their favorite and why. Compare and contrast the picture of your home to the house you visited. Which house has the most rooms? Did either one have stairs?
